The Salvation Army Owen Sound Community Church
The Salvation Army is a church as well as a charity. Its eleven doctrines are Wesleyan: that Scripture alone is the rule of faith and practice, that Christ's atonement is for the whole world, that believers may be wholly sanctified, and that continuing in salvation depends on continued obedient faith. It does not practise water baptism or the Lord's Supper, holding that no outward ceremony is necessary for salvation.
The Salvation Army’s Owen Sound Community Church is on 14th Street West, in the north-west of the city. In Salvation Army usage the congregation is a corps, its ministers are officers and its members are soldiers; Majors Jeff and Shannon Howard are the officers here.
Worship is on Sunday morning at half past ten. As in every Salvation Army corps, the church and the social work are the same undertaking: the Owen Sound ministries run a food bank, thrift stores here and in Port Elgin, a supervised access programme, camps for children, mobile outreach and a Christmas assistance programme.
The Army’s doctrines are Wesleyan, holding that Christ died for everyone and that a believer may be wholly sanctified. It does not baptize or celebrate the Lord’s Supper, teaching that no outward ceremony is necessary for salvation.
What to expect
A Salvation Army congregation is a corps and its ministers are officers; Jeff Howard and Shannon Howard, both majors, are the officers here. Alongside Sunday worship the corps runs a food bank, thrift stores in Owen Sound and Port Elgin, children's camps, mobile outreach, Christmas assistance and children's and youth ministries.
