St. Mary of the Assumption
St. Mary of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of Hamilton. Catholics confess the Nicene Creed, receive the seven sacraments, and hold that the bread and wine of the Mass become the body and blood of Christ. The parish is named for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
St. Mary of the Assumption is the Catholic parish of Owen Sound, worshipping in a stone church on 15th Street East that was built in 1870 and seats a little over three hundred. The parish was established in 1854, before the town was incorporated, and belongs to the Diocese of Hamilton.
It is the mother church of a grouping known as St. Mary’s and the Missions, which reaches north along the Bruce Peninsula as far as Tobermory and west to Sauble Beach, with mission churches at Meaford, Wiarton, Hepworth, Chatsworth, Lion’s Head and Cape Croker. Weekend Masses are staggered across those churches; at Owen Sound they are the Saturday vigil at five and two on Sunday morning. Weekday Mass is said from Monday to Friday, in the morning except on Tuesday.
