First Baptist Church of Owen Sound
First Baptist describes itself as 'a church that continues to stand under the scriptures', saying that God never changes and that the scriptures are God-breathed, written by man and inspired by God. Baptists baptize believers rather than infants, by immersion, and each congregation governs itself.
First Baptist stands on the south-west corner of Salvation Corners, an Italianate church of 1903 with semi-elliptical windows, facing St. George’s across 4th Avenue East and Georgian Shores across 10th Street.
The congregation meets for one service a week, at eleven on Sunday morning, and streams it on YouTube for anyone who cannot be there. Keith Sweeting is the pastor. The church office keeps hours from Tuesday to Friday and for an hour after the Sunday service.
Baptists hold that the church is a gathered company of believers, that baptism follows a personal profession of faith and is administered by immersion, and that each congregation is self-governing; First Baptist is listed among the churches of Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec.
What to expect
The congregation invites visitors to 'come visit us to worship together, learn and hear Pastor Keith's messages'. A lift reaches all levels of the building, with staff and ushers on hand to help.
